Abstract

A half dozen things have to go right for us to hear and understand.

  • We’ll take a walk through the chain of hearing events and review means to compensate when some fail.
  • Not just hearing aids, but also techniques for restoring the gift of hearing all the way from babies through to adults.
  • And, we’ll finish with a look at the developing over-the-counter (OTC) hearing aid industry.

Speaker: Steve Goldstein

Steve spent the 1990s as a Program Officer for International Networking at the U.S. National Science Foundation.  His “elevator speech” is “My job at NSF was to spread Internet around the world.” In 2013 he was inducted into the Internet Hall of Fame for his early-1990s work in helping to connect 25 countries to the global Internet, the latest being Mongolia in 1995.

Steve’s formal training spanned Physics (S.B. and S.M. from MIT), biology (ABD = all but dissertation at Georgetown University), and Engineering and Public Policy (Ph.D. from Carnegie-Mellon University).  He performed his active military service as an officer in the U.S. Naval Reserve, manning a desk at the Office of Naval Intelligence in Washington, D.C.

He resides with his wife in a Continuing Care Retirement Community in Charlottesville, Virginia, where he and a few others provide help with computers and networking to fellow residents.  Steve also facilitates a hearing support group in his retirement community. His hearing instrument specialist bills him as being better informed about hearing technology than any lay person he has met.
