Discussion Summary
The Virtual1 Longevity Explorer's Circle engaged in a broad discussion on how to get better sleep. They reviewed information on sleep, as well as, offered opinions on the routines, devices, and apps they used to increase sleep.
Categories
Some categories of information related to improving the quality and quantity of sleep included:
- segmented sleep
- effect of breathing on sleep
- sleep tests
- sleep anxiety
- sleep hygiene
- algorithms used for tracking sleep
- power naps
- catching up missed sleep
- dealing with sleepiness
- sleep-memory-immune system connection
Routines
Among the routines that members mentioned to induce sleep were:
- taking a bath
- visualizing tasks rather than just listing them
- writing down intruding thoughts
- controlling bedroom temperature
- using breathing techniques
- meditation
Gadgets
Things members used in getting better sleep included:
- white noise machine
- special sheets and/or pillows
- zero gravity positioning bed
- Fitbit
- CPAP machine
- sleep pad (records sleep)
- sleep ear buds
- sound videos
- blue light reduction glasses
- Wholetone device
Although a few members admitted to having occasional restless nights, most members had well-established, highly variable routines and techniques developed over long years of experience that seemed to work for them. Within that framework, members were curious to know what their peers were doing and how they might tweak their own habits to improve what was in place.
