Continuing Care Retirement Communities (CCRC) by Longevity Explorers: Recent @ Providence

Member Dick Congdon outlines the process that he and his wife Sheila followed in selecting a CCRC community in New Hampshire and offers tips for those considering this living option.  CCRC’s are designed to take residents from independent living to a nursing home, if necessary.  It is “care until you die.”  In most, you purchase your home and also pay a monthly fee to cover various amenities.  Congdon explains the importance of selecting a CCRC that has accreditation by CARF International (the Commission on Accreditation of Rehabilitation Facilities) and noting the difference between for-profit and non-profit organizations.  He stresses the importance of making a thorough investigation of the financial and legal arrangements, the basic fiscal strength of the CCRC community in terms of its financial viability and its compatibility with your interests and needs.  Because there is often a waiting list at the CCRC, one needs to recognize and plan for a waiting period before moving into the community.

While there are CCRCs in nearby Massachusettes, New Hampshire, and Connecticut, there are none in Rhode Island at this time.
