Discussion Summary

The Group was asked whether they have been successful at staying in touch with people they can't go to visit during the COVID lockdown. Being explorers, the group is familiar with Zoom and is asked for comments and what they think may be better than Zoom.

Pro and Con

  • The audio voice signal is fine on Zoom, but it drops notes if music is involved.
  • YouTube streaming is better for programs involving music.
  • Helen - international call quality is excellent, but not always perfect. It depends on the acumen of the user.
  • Two Zoom meetings simultaneously in the same room can be a challenge.
  • Facetime is more 1:1 than Zoom

For Advanced Users

One member describes how he uses his AppleTV device to project his Zoom sound and images from his tablet to a flat-screen TV, giving him a "big picture." Another member uses the Amazon echo show - with a 10" screen - for remote family visits. He finds it better than Zoom because it allows family groups to visit in a family 'portrait' format, not in 'tiles'.

In closing, the group learns about a new group feature offered by Facetime and wants to learn more about it.
