Discussion Summary

During this meeting the Virutal1 Explorers Circles began a discussion advertised as an examination of Smart Homes. One of the members reviewed his overview of the topic that appears on the Tech Enhanced Life website. Another listed the Smart Home characteristics built into his Senior Housing Community. While it was acknowledged by the group, that they were familiar with some of the common aspects of Smart Homes such as smart lights or thermostats, they were not ready to use some of the more advanced features of Smart Homes.

Then, the conversation switched to some of the difficulties members had with using Alexia or remembering code words to launch Smart Home applications. Members wished that a service would be more readily available that could help them set up Smart Home features and make fuller use of these apps.  While programing for Smart Home apps is available, members felt this was beyond their capability even with instructions. Another problem with Smart Home apps was felt the need for cameras in the home, which members were reluctant to use; some solutions were touched on. Members felt that Smart Homes were basically marketed to millennials to put in place in their parents homes. It appeared that most of this group was not fully ready to make use of what Smart Homes had to offer without help.
