Discussion Summary

An Explorer whose mother lives in the U.K. uses Facebook to stay in touch, but worries that she might be relying too much on Facebook when there might be better ways to keep up the relationship.

Another seeks to make sure that besides remote communication, there is a local group of people nearby to give his mother support. Such contacts can assess whether she is out enough, how she walking, and can emotional support.

Members agree that video calling is better in many ways the Facebook, but technical difficulties can make that unfeasible.

A member whose mother is in Korea where he does not know much about her community asks where he can start to make the contacts to develop a circle near her. Others see the issue of cultural sensitivity as a barrier to setting up arrangements that she might not welcome.

Explorer Rick notes that separation of families has become the norm in our society, and is an adjustment for everybody. Another member tells of having set up ‘buddy system’ with a friend in another state, trading emergency contact information with one another’s children if there is a concern.

Asking whether Facebook is replacing face to face contact, members find it deficient in terms of personal contact. All in all, the members see Facetime or Skype as superior to Facebook for maintaining a long distance relationship with more dimensions.
