From the Tech-enhanced Life Resource Database:

Tools for improving the quality of life as we grow older — shared by the Tech-enhanced Life community.

Sound mind is "a voice activated care assistant that reduces social isolation and keeps everyone connected". It is a curated set of skills running on an Amazon Show. It includes video calling (as do all Show products) and also some additional skills including the ability to have the device show photos of your choice.

From the website: "STAY CONNECTED. The easiest way for seniors to video call. Period. No setups. No apps. Just plug in and start speaking. Also includes native Alexa skills. Keep them stimulated with music, news, audiobooks, podcasts and more. Now you can be together even when you can’t get together."

Discussion and Reviews

I really like how they have solved the problem of setting up an Echo Show for a loved one in a facility. Solving the “required smartphone” was one of the biggest problems I found in setting up an Alexa Show for an older adult in a senior living facility.

After reading the FAQ on their site, I found that they don’t require the elder to have an Alexa account and they provide a phone number for making the calling connections.

I have a few questions that I hope someone using this device can answer

  • Can your loved one view their own Prime Video and Music?
  • Can a family member “Alexa call”  their loved one using there “own” echo Show or must they also have a SoundMind? I understand that they can use the mobile app?
  • Can I “drop-in” vis Alexa Calling on my loved one?
  • Can the loved one’s Soundmind link to the loved one’s Fire TV so that they can speak to a closer device?

Thanks for your questions!

• Prime Video and Music can be added by special request for an additional fee (Soundmind does not upcharge for these services)
• Either the free Alexa app or a personal Echo device can make calls to the loved one
• Drop-in is disabled by default, but can be enabled by request
• We are no longer supporting the Fire TV

Tech-enhanced Life Resource Database

This is one of hundreds of products and resources in the Tech-enhanced Life database of "useful products and resources".

The theme of this collection of resources is "tools we can use to help improve our quality of life as we grow older".

We have no vested interest in any of these products or services, but we have collected descriptions of them, and organized them according to various themes relating to the challenges of aging — so older adults and their families can find useful products they do not yet know about.

Members of Tech-enhanced Life can search by categories, add reviews of the products, and see links to the manufacturer's websites where they can buy the product or access the resource.

The criteria for adding products and resources to this database is that we think they "look useful, noteworthy, and interesting", and have the potential to improve life for older adults and their families. We have evaluated some of these products, in which case you will see links to a detailed review and or to explorer discussions about the product on this page, or inputs from explorers in the comments.

If the listing does not include reviews or explorer discussions, then we have not evaluated it sufficiently to be able to recommend it or comment on how well it works. If you research this product or resource further, and especially if you try it out, please come back to this page and add your comments.
