Event Details

Talk: Aging Parents, Robots & Virtual Visits: My Maker Project.  by Richard Caro.

Abstract: I wanted a better way to stay in touch with my mother who lives alone, thousands of miles away. I found phone and even video conferencing far less satisfying than a real visit. I wanted a way to have a virtual visit, and keep an eye out for subtle signs that things may not be going well. This talk is about my quest to solve this problem in a way that met my goals, and made my mother happy. I will talk about the end result: a “telepresence robot” that I cobbled together from existing products. The result is quite successful, but makes me realize just how much better a “next generation” version could be.

Speaker Bio:

Dr. Richard G. Caro has 20+ years of experience at the intersection of technology and business — as startup CEO (Vital Insite); startup CTO (Summit Technology); scientist / inventor; angel investor; and strategic advisor (TangibleFuture) to emerging growth companies. He is presently co-founder of Tech-enhanced Life, and of the Longevity Collective.

Richard has been responsible for development of a number of successful products; has 24 issued patents; and received a Ph.D in Physics from Oxford University, where he was a Rhodes Scholar. He is an active member of several Silicon Valley angel investor groups, with a particular focus on the intersection of healthcare, aging, and technology.

Your project: To show off your Maker project or sexy widget idea, you should contact us first to be sure we save a slot for you. Just send us an email with some details about what you want to talk about. If it sounds interesting we will make sure you get a  slot. If you prefer to just turn up, we will try and include you but no promises.

Plan on 5 minutes “airtime” in total. Use some of it to get feedback from the audience if you like.

Unconference: Interact with Virtual Presence Robots. Swap ideas about aging parents and robots. Interact with some of our Meetup group who will be attending the meeting via remote presence robot (courtesy of Sustainable Technologies).

We will have a structured Unconference, focused on robots, virtual visits and aging parents. This is your chance to add your ideas to the discussion, or share your experiences.
