Discussion Summary
Overview
This discussion focused on the exercise preferences of the members of the Virtual1 Explorers Circle. Members described the strategies and equipment used to maintain a level of fitness that would preserve their quality of life. Most members had a positive aptitude toward exercise; a few voiced the opinion that it was difficult or not a priority in their life.
Daily Life
Frequently mentioned as a strategy for getting enough exercise, was the choice of living in a community that required regular exercise a part of their daily life, often by walking. Also, discussed were other ways of building exercise into daily life by choosing to take the stairs rather than using the elevator, parking farther away than was required, or walking the dog.
Equipment
Some members accumulated equipment or outfitted a home gym to help them workout. While a few members used sophisticated equipment such as a NordicTrack or Thera Cycle, several others found lower tech items such as resistance bands useful. Several used their Fitbit as part of their excise routine.
Motivation
The need for finding the motivation to exercise was examined. A few members had little “tricks” to get into the mood for exercise such as a reminder built into Alexia, having a routine and getting into exercise clothes, or establishing a “mission” for walking. Also, mentioned was the importance of removing the barriers to exercise. An interesting exchange involved whether it might change attitudes and provide motivation for exercise if it could be constructed as a game rather than exercise that conveyed effort or work.
