Clothing & Accessories:  Older Adult Perspectives

The Impact Theme series: Longevity Explorers Discuss.

Our Longevity Explorer community explores topics like:

  • How do you get arthritis clothes, and what does the phrase "arthritis clothes" even mean?
  • Why can't you get stylish clothes that fit an older adult's body?
  • Are there gadgets that can help with doing up buttons, or closing jewelry clasps as one's dexterity dimishes, or one's eyesight becomes less good?
  • What are the right clothing solutions for people with Parkinson's or other types of tremor — who have difficulty with tasks like buttoning shirts and pants?
  • Surely there is something more stylish than Velcro?
  • How do you find attractive and functional shoes if you are elderly?
  • And what about the challenges of finding a bra that works for an older woman?

Better Bra for Older Women

Our Longevity Explorers have been engaged in a brainstorming session about bra's for older adults — ignited by a challenge from explorer Marly.

Challenge: finding a bra that works

By: Marly

For plus size older women, it is impossible to find a bra that is easy to put on (ie front-closing, preferably a sturdy zipper rather than hooks), has cap sleeves so that straps do not create constant shoulder abrasions, is cut high to actually offer support to the whole breast, has good back... Medication Reminder and Velcro Shirt Closures

I need a way to help not forget to take my medications on time. AND, I have trouble with my shirt buttons and want to get a short with Velcro closures but don't know where to go.

Arthritis sufferers need better clothing options

Here is my story. My mother has severe arthritis. Finding clothes for her is hard because she cannot put them on or take them off easily. Listen to the discussion of the problem at a meeting of the Longevity Collective.

About the Impact Theme Series

Our Longevity Explorers (hundreds of older adults with ages ranging from 60-95 years old) meet regularly to discuss topics at the intersection of aging and technology.

Among the many topics we discuss in these meetings, we have been exploring some specific themes which we think are going to be very important for older adults in the future, and which in our opinion are ripe for innovation. These make up our Impact Themes, and Clothing & Accessories is one of these themes.

In these discussions:

  • We share how we do things today;
  • We explore and critique existing products;
  • We talk about challenges we have that we wish products could solve; and
  • We dream up product concepts we wish someone like you would develop.

If you are developing products or services for older adults in the category of Clothing & Accessories, listen to the Longevity Explorer discussions on this page to get insights about how to develop better products and services for older adults.
