Analyst Summary: GreatCall | 5 Star

Medical Alert App for iPhone and Android. Uses same response center as more conventional GreatCall medical alert systems. This app no longer seems to be available as a stand alone app. But it comes as part of any of GreatCall's medical alert products, and is a service that is available on their Jitterbug phones.

Downloading and setting up the App

By: Richard Caro.  Updated: April 28, 2020.

I easily downloaded the 5 star App from iTunes for my iPhone (available also for Android). It was trivial to set up, using the 5 star service account I already set up for my Great Call Splash medical alert. You can see my comments about this service here.

The functionality of this App is really very similar to that of the Splash product. In both cases once you have activated your "button", you are talking with the Great Call 5 star response center.

The differences really come down to the form factor and capability of the wearable.

In the case of the Splash you have a dedicated widget and it has one button and it is very easy to find and press that button. And the Splash can include an autodetection fall alert, which the App alone can not. The Splash is waterproof which my phone is not.

In the case of this App, to use it you need to find and open the App on your SmartPhone. This does require a bit of navigating. I set it up so the App was on the home page of my phone. But you need to get past the phone's lock screen, then open the App, then push the big emergency button.

If you are willing to put up with this slightly less easy access to the emergency button, and if you would have your phone with you at most times anyway, this is a pretty useful option. It makes for one less bit of hardware to carry around, and using the App alone is cheaper than using the Splash.

If, like me, you already have the Splash, then the App has no additional cost. So I can choose whether to take my phone alone or the Splash when I go out and about.

Testing completed

By: the Editorial Team.  Updated: April 28, 2020.

I included this App with three others in our "Mobile Medical Alert System: Comparative testing" analysis.

As part of this test, we tried out this App in multiple locations and on multiple days over the space of a month, in real world situations. We compared it to other hardware based emergency response pendants as well.

This App worked well in all our tests. It is the best of breed in the "monitored emergency alert Apps" category in my opinion.

You can learn more about our testing in the article above.

I can not find the GreatCall 5 Star app in the iPhone App Store. Do you have any information that it no longer exists. The GreatCall website has no mention of it outside of purchasing the Jitterbug.
