GrandPad: Purpose-built Tablet

From the Tech-enhanced Life Resource Database:

Tools for improving the quality of life as we grow older — shared by the Tech-enhanced Life community.

GrandPad is a simple and secure tablet computer and a managed service that digitally connects an older adult to their family and friends. They can easily view family photos and videos, play games, check weather, listen to music, send voice emails, make phone calls, video chat, and more.

There is a companion app for others to use to communicate and share with the senior who is using GrandPad, making it easy to stay in touch.  There is a monthly fee for the service.

From the website:

"GrandPad comes preloaded with every feature seniors need to stay connected to their loved ones without the difficult and distracting features of other tablets. For a loved senior a simple tablet with intuitive interfaces, large buttons, and no frills is the key to staying close to friends and family, no matter where they live."

Has anyone here every used a GrandPad?  We tried to use Consumer Cellular, but in our area, the coverage was terrible.  MiL lives in Midwest, thought, and maybe coverage is better there?  Mostly I want to know if these are as easy and dependable as the company says. There is no hope that my MiL would be able to use anythink more complicated.  In fact, I wish I could find something that I could mount on the table and have only two buttons, one for SON and one for DAUGHTER.

Have you looked into  the Claris Companion 4G Tablet? I don't have a Grandpad or a Claris, but from this article it appears to be a similar device. In looking at their website, they seem to be using ATT instead on Consumer Cellular

Tech-enhanced Life Resource Database

This is one of hundreds of products and resources in the Tech-enhanced Life database of "useful products and resources".

The theme of this collection of resources is "tools we can use to help improve our quality of life as we grow older".

We have no vested interest in any of these products or services, but we have collected descriptions of them, and organized them according to various themes relating to the challenges of aging — so older adults and their families can find useful products they do not yet know about.

Members of Tech-enhanced Life can search by categories, add reviews of the products, and see links to the manufacturer's websites where they can buy the product or access the resource.

The criteria for adding products and resources to this database is that we think they "look useful, noteworthy, and interesting", and have the potential to improve life for older adults and their families. We have evaluated some of these products, in which case you will see links to a detailed review and or to explorer discussions about the product on this page, or inputs from explorers in the comments.

If the listing does not include reviews or explorer discussions, then we have not evaluated it sufficiently to be able to recommend it or comment on how well it works. If you research this product or resource further, and especially if you try it out, please come back to this page and add your comments.
